STEVE TURNER INSURANCE SPECIALIST FLORIDA

Ybor City FL

Hi, I’m Steve Turner, and I’d like to be Your Insurance Agent and Broker serving residents of Ybor City FL.

For many years, I’ve been helping neighbors (like you), in Ybor City FL, find insurance plans that meet your individual, family, and business needs that are Affordable (Cheap). Which types of insurance can I assist you with?

  • Accident Insurance
  • Dental Insurance
  • Disability Insurance
  • Group Health Insurance
  • Health Insurance
  • Life Insurance
  • Medicare Insurance
  • Medicare Advantage Insurance
  • Medicare Supplement Insurance
  • Prescription Drug Insurance

Why choose Steve Turner Insurance Specialist?

Because I’m an “Insurance Specialist“. An “insurance specialist” is a broad term encompassing insurance agents and insurance brokers, but the key difference lies in who the agent represents versus who the broker represents.

An “insurance agent” works directly for an insurance company, selling their specific policies to clients.

An “insurance broker” acts as an independent intermediary, comparing policies from multiple companies to find the best fit for their client’s needs, essentially representing the client rather than the insurance company.

I am both a licensed Insurance Agent and a licensed Insurance Broker.

My number one goal in life is to help people and ensure, without a shadow of a doubt, that you and your family are secure and protected. I will always be by your side, helping you mitigate risk by providing the industry’s best and most affordable insurance solutions.

I will find insurance plans for the entire family to help cover whatever life throws at you. I can help you save on severe medical emergencies, find a health insurance plan with low-to-no-cost doctor visits and affordable prescription medication, and protect your family in the event of an unexpected accident or illness.

Best of all – it doesn’t cost you anything extra to use an experienced Insurance Agent and Broker like me to help you find the Insurance Plans that fit your individual, family, or business needs.

The companies that sell the insurance plans “you choose” pay me – you don’t pay me. Calling any big insurance company directly won’t result in your getting a lower price, as they will forward your call to the next available insurance agent on their list. You won’t have had any opportunity to learn about the insurance agent you’re speaking with in advance to understand their qualifications or experience level and make an informed choice about who you want to work with.

Scroll down to the Contact Me section below and get in touch with me by phone, email, or schedule a “No Obligation” chat through my calendar. I look forward to speaking with you!

Of course. Ybor City is, without a doubt, one of the most historically and culturally significant neighborhoods in the entire state of Florida. It’s crucial to understand that it’s not a separate city, but a historic district within Tampa. Its story is a powerful tale of immigration, industry, and reinvention that shaped the identity of the entire Tampa Bay region.

The Birth of the “Cigar City” 🚬

Ybor City was born from the vision of one man: Vicente Martinez Ybor. He was a prominent Spanish cigar manufacturer who, in the mid-1880s, was looking to move his operations from the labor-strife-ridden environment of Key West. He was drawn to Tampa by its new railroad connection and humid climate, which was perfect for preserving tobacco leaves.

In 1885, Ybor purchased a 40-acre tract of what was then desolate palmetto scrubland just northeast of the small town of Tampa. He built a massive brick cigar factory, and almost overnight, a town sprang up around it. This wasn’t just a company town; it was a purpose-built immigrant haven. Ybor actively recruited workers, and thousands flocked to the new community, primarily from three regions: Cuba, Spain (specifically Asturias and Galicia), and Sicily, Italy.

Each group brought its own language, food, and customs, creating a multicultural melting pot that was unique in the American South. The bedrock of the community was the mutual aid societies and social clubs, such as the Cuban Club, the Centro Asturiano, and the Italian Club. These organizations provided healthcare, recreation, and social support for their members in an era before social safety nets. At its peak in the early 20th century, Ybor City was the undisputed “Cigar Capital of the World,” with over 200 factories producing hundreds of millions of hand-rolled cigars annually.

From Bust to Boom: A Modern Renaissance 🎸

Ybor City’s golden age couldn’t last forever. The Great Depression hit the luxury cigar market hard, and the industry was further damaged by the rise of cigarette smoking and the mechanization of cigar rolling. After World War II, the neighborhood entered a long period of decline, which was exacerbated when the construction of Interstate 4 cut directly through its heart, displacing families and businesses.

By the 1970s, Ybor was largely a ghost town of empty brick factories and storefronts. Its rebirth began in the 1980s when artists, drawn by the low rents and incredible historic architecture, began moving in. This sparked a revival that transformed Ybor’s main thoroughfare, 7th Avenue, into a vibrant and sometimes notorious nightlife district.

In 1990, the area was designated a National Historic Landmark District, one of only three in Florida. This recognition helped preserve its unique character and spurred more thoughtful redevelopment. Today, Ybor City is a dynamic neighborhood that balances its historic legacy with its role as a major entertainment, dining, and business hub.

Ybor City by the Numbers 🌇

Because it’s a neighborhood within Tampa, the numbers reflect its distinct urban character.

  • Official Designation: National Historic Landmark District.
  • County: Hillsborough.
  • Founded: 1885.
  • Named For: Its founder, Vicente Martinez Ybor.
  • Population: Approximately 4,500 residents in the historic core.
  • Key Feature: The wild chickens that roam the streets. These are the protected descendants of the backyard flocks kept by the neighborhood’s earliest residents.
  • Architecture: Characterized by multi-story brick buildings with ornate iron balconies, shotgun houses, and casitas (small homes for cigar workers).

Ybor’s Iconic Institutions 🇨🇺🇪🇸🇮🇹

The neighborhood is packed with businesses and landmarks that tell its story.

  • Columbia Restaurant: The crown jewel of Ybor City. Founded in 1905, it is Florida’s oldest restaurant and a world-famous destination for Spanish-Cuban cuisine and its nightly flamenco dance shows.
  • Ybor City Museum State Park: Housed in the historic Ferlita Bakery, this museum is the official caretaker of the neighborhood’s incredible story, offering tours of a restored cigar worker’s house (casita).
  • The Cuban Club (El Círculo Cubano): A stunning 1917 building with a theater, ballroom, and cantina. It’s a testament to the vibrant social and cultural life of Ybor’s Cuban immigrants and now serves as a major event venue.
  • King Corona Cigars: A quintessential Ybor establishment on 7th Avenue where you can watch cigars being hand-rolled, enjoy a café con leche, and soak in the neighborhood’s authentic atmosphere.
  • The Ritz Ybor: Originally a historic theater, this venue has been beautifully restored and now operates as one of Tampa’s premier live music and concert halls, representing Ybor’s modern entertainment identity.
