Do I Need Medicare Supplement Insurance?

Medicare Supplement, also known as Medicare Medigap, is a type of private insurance that can help pay for some of the costs that Original Medicare (Parts A and B) does not cover.

Private insurance companies sell Medicare Supplement policies and can help fill the gaps in Medicare coverage. Medicare Supplement plans do not provide additional benefits beyond what Original Medicare covers, but they may cover some or all of your deductibles, coinsurance, and copayments.

Unlike Medicare Advantage plans, Medicare Supplement plans do not have networks of providers, which means you can see any doctor or hospital that accepts Medicare. However, you must pay a monthly premium for a Medicare Supplement plan and your Medicare Part B premium.

HOW I CAN HELP YOU
Tampa, Florida

KEY DETAILS

Benefits:

Medicare Supplement or Medigap policies are standardized and are labeled with letters A through N. Each plan provides a different set of benefits. All Medicare Supplement/Medigap policies cover Part A coinsurance and hospital costs, and some plans also cover Part B coinsurance and deductibles, as well as other services.

Cost:

Medigap policies have a monthly premium, and the cost can vary depending on your chosen plan and where you live. You may also be required to pay deductibles, copayments, and coinsurance.

Enrollment:

You can enroll in a Medigap policy during your Medigap Open Enrollment Period, which starts when you are 65 or older and enrolled in Medicare Part B. During this time, you have a guaranteed right to buy any Medigap policy sold in your state.

Coverage:

Medigap policies only work with Original Medicare (Parts A and B). They do not work with Medicare Advantage plans.

Underwriting:

When you apply for a Medigap policy, the insurance company may review your health history and can charge you more or deny coverage based on your health status.

ADVANTAGES

More Comprehensive Coverage:

Medicare Supplement plans can provide more comprehensive coverage than Medicare Advantage plans by filling in the “gaps” in Original Medicare coverage, such as deductibles, coinsurance, and copayments.

Freedom to Choose Providers: Unlike Medicare Advantage plans, Medicare Supplement plans do not have networks of providers, which means you can see any doctor or hospital that accepts Medicare.

No Prior Authorization:

Medicare Supplement plans do not require prior authorization for treatments or services, giving you more control over your healthcare.

Guaranteed Renewable:

Medicare Supplement plans are guaranteed renewable, meaning the insurance company cannot cancel your coverage as long as you pay your premiums on time.

DISADVANTAGES

Higher Premiums:

Medicare Supplement plans typically have higher monthly premiums than Medicare Advantage plans.

No Prescription Drug Coverage:

Medicare Supplement plans do not include prescription drug coverage, so you will need to enroll in a separate Medicare Part D plan for prescription drug coverage, which is an additional cost.

No Additional Benefits:

Medicare Supplement plans do not provide additional benefits beyond what Original Medicare covers.

Limited Enrollment Period:

You can enroll in a Medicare Supplement plan during your initial enrollment period or a special enrollment period, and you may be subject to medical underwriting if you apply for coverage outside of these periods.

MEDICARE SUPPLEMENT FAQ
Tampa, Florida

When you buy a Medigap policy in Tampa, Florida, you must have Medicare Part A and Part B. You will have to pay the monthly Medicare Part B premium. In addition, you will have to pay a premium to the Medigap insurance company. Your Medigap policy is guaranteed renewable as long as you pay your premium.

In Tampa, Florida, once you buy a policy, you’ll keep it as long as you pay your Medigap premiums. All standardized Medigap policies are automatically renewed yearly, even if you have health problems.

In Tampa, Florida, if you have a higher income, you’ll pay an additional premium amount for Medicare Part B and Medicare prescription drug coverage. We call the extra amount the “income-related monthly adjustment amount.” Here’s how it works: Part B helps pay for your doctor’s services and outpatient care.

In Tampa, Florida, Medicare Advantage and Medicare Supplement are different types of Medicare coverage. You cannot have both at the same time. Medicare Advantage bundles Part A and B, often with Part D and other types of coverage. Medicare Supplement is additional coverage you can buy if you have Original Medicare Part A and B.

In Tampa, Florida, you can sign up for Part A any time after you turn 65. Your Part A coverage starts 6 months from when you sign up or apply for benefits from Social Security (or the Railroad Retirement Board). Coverage can’t start earlier than the month you turn 65.

In Tampa, Florida, an insurance company can’t refuse to sell you a policy based on your pre-existing condition during your Medicare Supplement Open Enrollment Period. It can’t charge you more than someone without health problems. After your Open Enrollment Period ends, you may be subject to medical underwriting.

With Medicare Supplement Plan F, you get the most complete coverage available in Tampa, Florida. And because Plan F also covers costs over Medicare-approved amounts, you may have no out-of-pocket costs for hospital and doctor’s office care.

In Tampa, Florida, there is no limit on how much cash you can have with Medicare Part A. You must have paid taxes for 40 quarters (10 years) during your working lifetime, and you must be age 65 unless otherwise qualified due to a disability eligible for social security.

In Tampa, Florida, if you earn more than $103,000 ($206,000 if you’re married), you pay higher monthly rates for Medicare Parts B and D. For 2024, your costs for Medicare Parts B and D are based on your 2022 tax return income.

In Tampa, Florida, the sale of your home could affect your Medicare Part B and Part D premiums if a significant capital gain increases your modified adjusted gross income (MAGI) above certain thresholds.

Income-Related Monthly Adjustment Amounts (IRMAA) explained in Tampa, Florida

  • Depending on your income, your monthly Medicare Part B or Part D premiums may be higher due to an Income-Related Monthly Adjustment Amount (IRMAA)
